Leisure industry is today one of the largest income-producing sectors in the world's economy as also the world's largest employer. While the student currently undertaking Bachelor of Education (Physical Education Opting) is introduced to the area of Leisure and recreation through course such as Aerobics and Sports Tourism, the need for professional in this area cannot be over emphasized. In this Regard the Department of Physical Education and Sport is in the process of developing a new program to address the need. A program of leisure and recreation studies would prepare students to become leaders in the recreation, tourism and hospitality sectors by creating opportunities for people to experience the highest quality of life possible. Its main objective is to develop understanding of the importance of leisure in today's fast paced world and how as professionals, learners can have a positive impact on people, programs and communities. This program will provide learners with educational opportunities to develop their ability to organize, plan, and manage leisure, hospitality, and tourism service resources in diverse communities.

By its nature, the field of leisure and recreation studies enjoy the benefits of it philosophy of experiential learning. In this program learning experiences are created during the actual creation of learning contents of the program, events, and experiences for the people being served so that can achieve a more satisfying quality of life.

This program will thus produce professionals who will sensitize citizens of the importance of positive utilization of the time and space for maximal gain on their day today chores; educate citizens on meaningful utilization of free time; develop skills for alternative social affiliations through Physical activities;  offer guide on when and where to find such activities;  sensitize the general population on the importance of engaging in leisure and recreational activities for physical, mental and social lifelong wellbeing and management of hypo- kinetic diseases through adopting active lifestyle particularly away from the rigors of day today occupational routines.

The proposed program will lead to award of the degree of Bachelor of Science

(B Sc) degree in Leisure and Recreation studies.
