Kenya is a renowned sporting nation that has excelled in the disciplines of track and field athletics, rugby and hockey at the international stage. As the competition on the world stage become more pronounced the need for the science in physical education and sport become more apparent. The winning edge required in human performance is found in the sciences of physical education. The science in physical education includes Functional Human Anatomy which takes cognisance of the structure of the body, Human Physiology which, Exercise physiology and Biomechanics which is the physics of sports. At The University of Nairobi, students who register for the Bachelor of Education (Physical Education Option) are ale expected to study these sciences.

The Department of Physical Education and Sport is also in the process of creating a new degree in Human Movement and Sports Sciences. This is in response to the facts that research indicates that life style diseases are becoming more common. The remedy for these diseases is exercise and nutrition. The degree in Human movement and sports Science hope to creates personnel who will meet the needs of the population in addressing this new menace.
