Dr. Simon Munayi, a UoN don was recently elected to the Presidency of the Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports (FEAUS) for a period of four years. Dr. Munayi was the Secretary General of the body before being elected President. The Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports comprises of 12 countries which include: the twelve countries in the Eastern Africa region, namely, Burundi, Comoros, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somali, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The Secretary General is Brian Miiro from Makerere University while the Treasurer will be Patrick Mwani from University of Dodoma in Tanzania.
The Objectives of the Federation Include:
- Promoting sporting activities within the region
- Promoting the exchange of ideas related to and; incidental to sport development amongst students and staff.
- Organizing the Eastern Africa University Games (EAUG) biannually and championships and other sports related activities from time to time as will be organized by the Executive Board. The Federation has held 12 episodes of EAUG. University of Nairobi has attended all the episodes, doing very well in all of the events.
- Promoting collaboration in sports related research, which includes hosting of conferences and workshop.
FEAUS is currently poised to be the conduit to world University games. And will play a major role in the qualification for the World University games that are also held every two years. The new President hopes to build the Federation into a much stronger sports organized with women games and sports for the persons living with disability (PWDs) becoming more prominent in the region. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federation has started to look at the possibility of promoting e-games to keep the young brilliant minds found in the universities in the region occupied.
